Bed Bugs
What are bed bugs?
Bed bugs are small, oval-shaped, non-flying, and non-jumping insects with reddish-brown, flat bodies. They are sometimes mistaken for ticks because of their size and appearance. Bed bugs typically hide in mattresses, box springs, bed frames, furniture, cracks, and other dark areas, coming out at night to feed on blood.
Nymphs, or juvenile bed bugs, are very small, measuring about 1.5 millimeters when they hatch. They grow through several stages before reaching adulthood. Adult bed bugs can grow up to 9 millimeters long and may become more reddish and swollen after feeding. Because they are small and good at hiding, bed bug infestations can be difficult to detect and eliminate without professional treatment.
How do they spread?
Bed bugs feed on the blood of humans and other warm-blooded animals. They hide in mattresses, bed frames, furniture, wall cracks, baseboards, and other dark, protected areas. Since they cannot fly or jump, they spread by crawling or by being carried on clothing, luggage, bedding, and furniture.
Because bed bugs are extremely small and can hide in tiny spaces, they can quickly move from one room to another. In apartments and other multi-unit buildings, they may also spread between neighboring units, making early detection and professional treatment important.
What are the symptoms of bed bug bites?
Bed bugs are primarily active at night and usually bite while people are sleeping. Bites are commonly found on exposed areas such as the face, neck, hands, arms, and other uncovered skin. Their bites are often painless and may go unnoticed at first, with small red bumps appearing later. The affected area may become swollen and itchy, and excessive scratching can sometimes lead to skin irritation or infection.
Not everyone reacts to bed bug bites. Some people may have little or no visible reaction, which means an infestation can go unnoticed for some time. If you notice unexplained bites or other signs of bed bugs, a professional inspection can help identify the problem.
